Academics Grades 5-6

Elementary G. 5 – 6 & Middle G. 1 – 3 Curriculum

English lessons consist of equal parts (50% each) of studying original texts, including essential readings for each grade, literary award-winning works, and recommended books by American teachers, as well as connecting nonfiction passages to critical essay writing and debate in the style of American school classes. Additionally, there are Korean-style grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension lessons to prepare for middle school internal assessments.

1. Novel & Discussion (English Class)

The advanced original text course for upper elementary and middle school students focuses on deep discussions of literary works to enhance both reading comprehension skills and critical thinking. Creative writing is also strengthened. Moreover, students have the opportunity to grow into global citizens by learning about various cultures and gaining background knowledge.

2. Nonfiction Reading & Essay Writing (English Class)

Students carefully read nonfiction passages on topics such as sociology, nutritional science, social psychology, technology, and physiology, and then write a five-paragraph essay. During this process, they handle advanced vocabulary and complex grammatical structures, while training in discussions and writing on academic topics.

3. TOEFL Reading (English Class)

Students practice reading TOEFL passages, including exposition, argumentation, and historical narratives, and learn essential vocabulary. They improve their problem-solving skills by working on various question types (e.g., reference, factual information, inference, rhetorical purpose, etc.).

4. Middle/High School Vocabulary (Korean Class)

Students systematically learn vocabulary from middle school to university entrance exam levels, focusing on word origins, synonyms, antonyms, derivatives, and polysemes. Thorough management is provided through daily quizzes and a retesting system.

5. Middle/High School Grammar (Korean Class)

Students learn the structure of complex sentences and advanced grammatical rules, with the goal of mastering accurate reading and writing through grammar study. In addition, ongoing practice with past exam questions prepares them thoroughly for internal assessments.

6. Reading Comprehension (Korean Class)

Students learn how to identify the main idea of a text, understand its structure, and how recognizing the theme helps with problem-solving. They also work intensively on practice problems to build a solid foundation for university entrance exam reading comprehension. Every two months, students take a mock exam to check their foundational skills and receive guidance on learning goals and solutions.
